Faster Panasonic, 4680 EV battery development is now urged by Tesla. The giant automaker said it wants the Japanese multinational conglomerate company to manufacture more battery cells for its electric car units.
The EV maker introduced its advanced 4680 battery cell back in 2020. After that, it started integrating cell tech into its popular Model Y units since it is cheaper.
Aside from less expensive EV units, this battery also extends the range of Tesla's zero-emission cars. But, since the demand for electric vehicles is increasing, the automaker needs help from battery suppliers to help it produce the 4680 battery cells.
Faster Panasonic 4680 EV Battery Development Now Urged by Tesla!
According to Electrek's latest report, Tesla needs help from battery suppliers to produce enough 4680 battery cells for its newly manufactured electric car units.
Because of this, Panasonic decided to unveil its own version of the advanced power cell of the automaker, making it one of the major battery manufacturer partners of Tesla.
Recently, the tech firm secured a $700 million investment to produce the needed cells for Tesla Model Y units.
But, it seems like Tesla wants more effort from Panasonic. The company's Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu said that the automaker asked them to have faster development outputs since more battery cells are needed.
"We can't say more than what has been released, but we are getting many requests. We see continued strong demand from Tesla, for 2170 batteries, but also for faster development of the 4680," said the Panasonic CFO.
Faster 4680 battery production is needed since Tesla is expected to use the cell tech in its new Cybertruck, which will be manufactured at Tesla Gigafactory Berlin and Gigafactory Texas.
How Will Panasonic Meet Tesla's Demand?
One of the major efforts that Panasonic will do is to open a U.S.-based facility that it will use to ramp up the 4680 battery cell productions.
Teslarati reported that the Japanese electronics manufacturer is still checking if opening a new manufacturing plant in the United States is worth it.
Critics explained that the new Panasonic plant in the U.S. will depend on its profits from its lithium-ion batteries.
This means that if the manufacturer is not generating that much income, then the new facility is unlikely to be built. If you want to see more details about Panasonic's planned U.S. facility, you can visit this link.
Meanwhile, BMW vehicles without Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support will be shipped.
On the other hand, the new 2023 Acura Integra production has already started, with deliveries expected to happen around June.
