VR Headset with Mouth Haptics Attach to Device—Will It be Available Built-In?

Move over Meta's glove haptics technology, there is a new "bad boy" in town.

Researchers developed a new advancement in XR technology (extended reality), and it is an attachment that could capture mouth haptics in a VR headset that captures movement and changes. It only captures the lower part of the face, but it brings a lot of advancement to the current XR tech that the world has, especially as it is something that current headsets cannot see.

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University developed a new technology that adds more to the XR experience and attaches itself to the virtual reality headsets available to the public now. It is a mouth haptics device, and it captures the facial movements that would make it easier for users to portray more of their face despite the upper half-covering with the headset.

According to Digital Trends, the Future Interfaces Group at the university brought an attachment to VR headsets that will get a feature to read more of one's expression. It would then help capture more of the face with its grid of ultrasonic transducers that a person cannot see, but it may be felt as there is some pressure on the skin.

The mouth area is one of the most sensitive body regions, and several haptic movements were made here.

The logic of this captures the facial expressions that include the twitching of the nose, movement of the cheeks, and motion that comes from the mouth and surrounding areas. It would help show more of the face and bring an action to one's virtual representation inside the VR world, not just a blank or expressionless face.

The Metaverse and the Tech Developed For It

Virtual reality headsets focus on bringing a sight to see for users to get immersed in the virtual world, also known as the metaverse, and it is a gateway to a new reality developed by the world now. However, it is only for the eyes, and other supporting technology now brings an addition to its features, soon coming to users.

Want to complete your metaverse experience? Meta (formerly Facebook) is bringing devices that add to its immersion, both in leaks and confirmed statements.

One of them is the confirmed haptic gloves wearable attachment to the VR headsets present now, and it offers the feeling of touch in one's hands and fully captures the experience and movement.

However, it is not the only advancement from the company, as there are leaks regarding body-tracking support coming soon for users, but it is still on the drawing board or is only speculations.

Note that Meta is not the only company developing these technologies and additions to the XR experience they are bringing to the world, only that it is not yet at the point where companies can boast of it. More devices are coming, and it may soon bring a full integration that does not need attachments.

It is still notable that researchers bring a face haptics scanner that will monitor one's facial movements, especially for the lower part of it.
