The Apple Music app has finally been integrated into Roku's long lineup of various products and devices. The rollout is global starting on May 2nd, allowing Roku customers to experience their favorite music and select 4k music videos on the company's various streaming players, TVs, and audio devices. The Apple Music app can be found among Roku Channel Store downloads later on Monday.
With a 90 million-large selection of available songs on Apple Music's on-demand streaming service, in addition to nearly 30,000 playlists, the integration of this app was sorely necessary. Apple Music initially launched on Fire TV devices nearly three years prior. Spotify was added to the Roku directory in 2020. Several other music streaming applications also exist on Roku's many platforms, including Vevo, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora, and even TuneIn.
On select Roku devices, Apple Music subscribers will likewise be privy to 4K music videos, as well as concerts, podcasts, and original shows. The Roku integration will also allow customers to play their favorite songs with time-synced lyrics for some additional fun when needed. Apple Music users will also have the full breadth of control for Apple Music Radio livestream on Roku devices, when users' own music library isn't enough.
Those without an Apple Music log-in will be able to sign-up via the Roku Channel Store with a free one-month trial. Months following the free trial period will be opted into Apple Music's existing monthly rate that starts at $9.99.
Despite being among the largest streaming platforms in existence, Roku's channel revenue split sits at a 20% price point, which may allude to why Apple Music hasn't been added to Roku devices until today. Rokus utilizes the 20% revenue share in order to better monetize channels through in-app purchases and subscriptions. It's unclear where exactly Apple Music will land in terms of its revenue split with Roku, but both companies are remaining rather silent on the details.
In Roku's corner, however, is a rather positive Q1 2022 earnings report, which highlights a major year over year 14% bump in active user accounts, totalling around 61.3 million actives and a 1.1 million sequential gain overall. Revenue, too, was relatively positive, sitting at 27.8% year over year. The inclusion of Apple Music on its integrated channels may well aid in both user and revenue forecasts coming for Q2.
