Xiaomi Intentionally Slows Down Certain Apps Like 'Genshin Impact': Learn How

Xiaomi is now intentionally slowing down certain apps like "Genshin Impact" or "Fortnite."

It is being said Xiaomi devices slow down the performance depending on which apps are being used.

Xiaomi Follows Samsung and Slows Apps Running on Mi 11

According to the story by Pocketnow, this particular technique is actually known when it comes to Samsung devices. Samsung has been known to cut the performance of certain apps with the use of an identifier to determine which apps to slow down.

The latest reports note that the company will start to implement this particular change with the Xiaomi Mi 11. This information was sourced by @jfpoole on Twitter, who reportedly found out this new move while running some tests on different popular games.

Xiaomi Showed 30% Less Single-Core and 15% Less Multi-Core Performance

Geekbench app co-founder John Poole gave a statement saying Xiaomi is now using application identifiers to determine how much performance they would allot per app. Poole took to Twitter to post the results of running Geekbench with the Xiaomi 11 and running "Geekbench disguised as Fortnite" on the same device.

Per the test results, Xiaomi Mi 11 showed slower performance by 30% when it came to single-core performance and 15% when it came to multi-core scores. This was recorded while running "Fortnite" as well as other games like "Genshin Impact."

Increased Cortex-1 Based Core's Performance

Pocketnow notes that the publication can defend the practices saying the company might have made these decisions in order to increase the Cortex-1 based core's performance "under sustained load." This would help the device avoid overheating issues while potentially increasing battery life.

Whatever the actual case might be, the company just recently released the Xiaomi Mi 11 during the first month of 2021. This means that the device itself has already existed for a year in the smartphone market.

No Confirmation if Other Lineups Will Experience Decreased Performance as well

Pocketnow, however, noted that it is still not sure if the company was always slowing down its performance for certain apps or if the changes were implemented within one of its many updates.

As of press time, it remains unclear as to whether all other Xiaomi devices aside from just the Xiaomi Mi 11 lineup will be slowing down performance as well. The new discovery by Geekbench only investigated the performance of Xiaomi's Mi 11 lineup so far with no updates regarding other units as of writing.

The article by Pocketnow notes that in the end, it could be possible that Xiaomi is now following the steps of Samsung, which ended in the latter having to apologize to its users. Samsung then released an update which would then allow them to "disable throttling" for a number of apps.
