"Horizon Forbidden West" is shaping up to be a massive financial success for Guerilla Games and Sony, judging by the numbers.
Dexerto reports that the heralded sequel to 2017's "Zero Dawn" has now topped the boxed game sales charts in the UK. With this, it has beaten out Techland's "Dying Light 2" and the open-world "Pokemon" game "Pokemon: Legends Arceus." The "Dying Light" sequel is in third place, while the "Pokemon" title is nestled snugly in second place.
Around 68% of those who bought a boxed copy of "Forbidden West" did so for the PS5. This means that they got themselves physical copies of the game instead of digital, whose sales figures aren't known as of this moment. This is also likely testament to how the disc version of the PS5 sold, despite the growing prevalence of games being distributed via online storefronts.
The rest of the boxed sales were on the older-generation PlayStation 4 consoles.
Despite the success, however, the game's opening sales figures still weren't enough to compete with those of "Zero Dawn." According to GamesIndustry.biz, the numbers are 35% below what the first game sold within the early days of its launch.
But since "Forbidden West" sales include digital downloads, one can assume that the numbers will balloon once those figures are factored in. As per the original GamesIndustry report, the digital sales numbers will be released "later in the week."
Aside from this, the sales numbers have also made "Horizon Forbidden West" the second-largest PS5 game launch in the console's early history.
TheGamer reports that Guerilla Games' new open-world opus only trails the launch of "Spider-Man: Miles Morales," while leading those of "FIFA 22." Its box office success also seemed to coincide with the release of more PS5 consoles. But since Sony has plans to keep ramping up the production of their next-gen systems, one can again only assume that "Forbidden West" sales numbers will keep growing.
How Has 'Horizon Forbidden West' Fared So Far?
To put it simply: it is doing great as of this writing, which is mere days after release. The sales numbers are only one part of the equation.
The game seems to be very well-received by both critics and fans. For one, most review scores have come out excellent, with it regularly getting 9/10 scores. IGN mostly praises the game for its majestic open world, which is full of more meaningful quests and tough machines to conquer as protagonist Aloy seeks to finish what she started.
Despite that, however, a handful of people seem to be review-bombing the game for no good reason at all. According to PushSquare, a few reviews on both the PS4 and PS5 versions are as low as a 0/10. With how many other reviewers and players have received the game so far, though, one could chalk this up to trolls with nothing better to do.
Either way, they can't stop what's coming. A good chunk of the reception for "Forbidden West" is overwhelmingly positive, with even the toughest critics of the open-world game genre praising it.
