COVID-19 Pandemic: Not Over for Immunocompromised People—But Why?

The COVID-19 pandemic is loosening its restrictions and allowing more people to go outside compared to when it first started. Now, fewer people wear face masks, and it is more of preference already as the vaccinated compose most of the people outside due to requirements. Still, it leaves the immunocompromised people at a dead end to protect themselves.

The pandemic may be over for some, but immunocompromised people are still fighting it.

According to The Atlantic, there is a "pandemic limbo" for the immunocompromised people they will not yet escape, unlike the general public who have standard immune systems. The limbo is not the severity of COVID-19 itself, but how their body reacts to the virus's presence that will not be gone from the environment now.

The research looks into how vaccines affect immunocompromised people, and despite getting the top vaccine with the highest protection rate, it is not enough to immunize these people. The immunocompromised people are composed of those who have weakened immune systems, transplant donors or receivers, and those who experience a dreadful disease.

Also part of the immunocompromised community is the elderly.

The Pandemic Is Not Over for Some People Yet

The pandemic is not yet over even for the ordinary people, and it is fair for the immunocompromised ones that need to protect themself twice as much as regular ones. If vaccines and face masks are enough for some, immunocompromised people would have to double up using more protective equipment and avoid the public more often as they like.

COVID-19: Vaccines and its Effect Now

For some people like Tesla CEO Elon Musk, COVID-19 was over a long time ago, and the variants that people are fighting against right now are different from the SARS-CoV2 virus. However, this is still the virus that started the lockdowns and restrictions more than two years ago for the other health organizations, bringing the world to its knees.

The era of vaccines came less than a year later, with different products and brands pushing forward their immunization to protect against the virus. The vaccine development is rapid and massive that it has reached almost everyone in the world and is now moving to lower its age of eligibility for those less than five years old.

Booster shots are also here to protect further and provide more immunity against COVID and its variants.

COVID-19 vaccines are not that effective in protecting and offering their antibodies to immunocompromised people mainly because their immune systems cannot protect the body. That only means that the COVID-19 pandemic is not ending for them anytime soon, despite the many good shots that will help them avoid the infections.
