AIA Health, a health insurance company in Australia, is giving away an Apple Watch to members who hit their fitness goals, which resulted in an average 35% rise in activity for its users.
AIA Health Gives Apple Watch
In 2020, the Australian health insurance company introduced Apple Watch to its Vitality program. The members who chose to sign up would get the device for free as long as they continue to meet the specific health goals that the company has set for them.
AIA Health said in a report that when comparing physical activity in 2019 and 2020, those who took up AIA Vitality's Apple Watch Benefit, have seen an increase in activity by 35% on average yearly.
The health insurance company said that the age group with the most significant improvement in activities was those who have members who are 50 years old and older, as there was an increase of 51% increase yearly, according to MacTrast.
The company said that rich health and well-being insights Apple Watch users gain, combined with the behavioral principle of loss aversion that has been added into the Vitality program, led to the increases in physical activity levels.
AIA examined the results of around 1,198 members. To make the results comparable, the members surveyed had to have opted in the program and be full AIA members throughout 2019.
The company also used the data from the previous year to rule out the chances of any fluke result in the survey.
The firm said that the physical activity remained consistent at the original increased level seen linked to the Active Benefit construct across 2018 to 2019, then increased so much when the Apple Watch Benefit was introduced in 2020.
The company continued that AIA Vitality members physical activity behavior was consistent for two years before the introduction of the Apple Watch Benefit. Its introduction drove the members that opted-in to the benefit to improve their physical activity instead of 2020 being an anomaly.
Apple Watch's Health Benefits
Apple Watch has impressed several medical professionals for its ability to save data accurately and detect certain illnesses.
This week, an Australian nursing student said that an Apple Watch detected her thyroid condition months before she was diagnosed.
The nursing student, who posted her discovery on TikTok, encouraged people to turn on the heart rate notification in their device and check the data frequently.
The nursing student, named Lauren on TikTok, added a screenshot of the graph from the device's health app to her video and said that instead of waiting for the symptoms to get worse, she could have gone to the doctor last year when the data showed a sudden drop in her condition.
Lauren revealed the chart showed her cardiovascular system was not working well at the time, as reported by Apple Insider.
The drop in her heart rate is connected with other types of symptoms, including sensitivity to heat, dry skin, weight gain, fatigue, and increased irritability, according to The Independent.
In 2021, Lauren was diagnosed with thyroid hemiagenesis, and she is now getting treatment for it. She admits that the device was not an item that she thought could give her medical advice, but it ended up being very useful.
