Does Binge-Watching Lead to Blood Clots, VTE? New Research Correlates Long Hours to Morbidity

Binge-watching your favorite series or movies while lounging in a resting position may be the best way to relax after a strenuous day at work, but that may lead to blood clots and a condition called VTE. It is known that blood clots may lead to severe conditions and death, not having the proper circulation on different parts of the body and resulting in massive problems.

Binge-Watching: Does it Cause Blood Clots and VTE?

University of Bristol researchers led by Setor Kunotsor bring research entitled "Television viewing and venous thromboembolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis" that looks into the binge-watching's effects.

The research, published recently last Wednesday, discusses how much inactivity can lead to massive problems that people are unaware of and do not mind. One of the diseases mostly linked to it is the blood clots and the condition called venous thromboembolism of VTE.

VTEs are blood clots deep in the veins, usually occurring in the pelvis, thigh, hip, and arms. The CDC says that the public can avoid VTE complications and their actual manifestation by regular exercises and keeping a sedentary or active lifestyle.

Binge-Watching is Unhealthy: Exercise the Answer?

Binge-Watching is unhealthy, and it is because people are stationary, with less circulation of the blood from the heart to different parts of the body. Developing VTE is also an indication of heart disease as people needs exercise to keep said muscle healthy.

Increased physical activity from young people until their old age is the best solution to avoid any form of disease relating to a blood clot.

Binge-Watching and the VOD, Digital Life

The video-on-demand (VOD) life is best known with Netflix and its emergence in the late 2010 decade when streaming first caught wind among the trends online. On-demand means that people can access it anytime, anywhere with a smart device and an internet connection to play the clip. Sometimes, it does not even need the internet as people can download it for a limited time.

Popular series are available now, and Netflix leads the introduction of many, including that of "The Witcher" saga, "League of Legends'" animated series "Arcane," "Squid Game," and more. Technology made this access possible, and it helps bring it to people for their enjoyment and control.

However, the main concern now is health and its effect on people who focus on entertainment more than physical fitness.

The switch to the digital lifestyle in the current world trend is a massive change in fitness and wellness, often slept on and forgotten.

The researchers prove a good point that binge-watching instead of physical activity may lead to diseases, including blood clots that are common during inactivity.
