Apple Podcast Subscription officially rolled out on June 15 after the launch date in May faced a major hiccup. With that, paying listeners could now access exclusive titles, experience ad-free listening, and more features.
The Cupertino giant announced the feature at the 2021 spring event in May.
Moreover, the subscription service paved the way for podcast creators to produce paid content. It provides them another opportunity to monetize the spoken word medium.
Podcasting has taken the spotlight as the COVID-19 slowed down the whole world. It has been a go-to medium for stay-at-home folks to explore new topics, or deepen knowledge for their interests.
As such, Spotify announced on April 24 that it is going against Apple Music with a similar podcast subscription service. However, it pushed through as promised, unlike what unfortunately happened to its close rival.
Official Launch After Month-Long Delay
Apple has since taken it slowly—at its own pace—to finally release a subscription service for the spoken word.
As first reported by The Verge, the launch has moved to June 15. The information came from an internal email that Apple sent to its creators. In vague terms, the company said that "it wanted everything to be perfect."
Thus, it will take some time to see the light of day.
Separately, podcasters blurted out their frustration for the various issues that surfaced after an Apple Podcast update. It comes before the subscription service rolls out.
To be exact, PodNews reported that content creators were barred from accessing their accounts. If ever they get through and logged in, the analytics section presents no data at all. Lastly, the new episodes that users upload took hours to show up in the app.
Apple Podcast Features: Exclusive Shows, Ad-Free Listening
The subscription tier of Apple Podcasts gives users the opportunity to discover new titles and an uninterrupted listening experience.
The feature allows users to pay depending on what the podcasters set. To be clear, the subscription service does not give off the whole library of exclusive titles. Users will have to pay for a certain podcast instead — similar to paying for a certain album with bonus content, MakeUseOf said.
Apple Podcast Subscription: How Much?
According to the promotional images from Apple, the range of prices for podcast subscriptions starts from $0.50 to $4.50 monthly.
MacRumors also noted that Apple earns from the new feature. The company is taking a 30% cut from the creators for each subscription.
