Apple transformed the 19th-century Palazzo Marignoli in Rome as it opens Apple Via del Corso on May 27. The 17th Apple Store in Italy restored and reinvented the aesthetics of the centuries-old building.
According to Apple's press release, the newest store will be the "most significant restoration project" that the company has done. The iPhone maker had to employ architects and a team of local restorers to achieve both structural integrity, and aesthetic restoration in the palace, Tech Radar reported.
Also, the newest store is bringing Today at Apple Made in Rome. As such, local artists will hold online sessions in the ballroom about music, design, and art. Yes, there is a ballroom in the new store.
Furthermore, the Apple Store in Rome has created 100 new jobs for it alone. In total, according to the Cupertino giant, about 200 employees will be present in the new store.
Apple Via del Corso: Old But Gold
The structure was erected and designed in 1873 by Salvatore Bianchi, a renowned architect.
Architect Giulio Podesti then renovated the facade that still exists today. Apple had to commission Foster + Partners to design an interior that would mirror the architecture of the Palazzo, MacRumors reports.
In the past, Marquis Flippo Marignoli used to live in the said structure. It also has been the location of one of the well-known hangout places in Rome, the Caffè Aragno.
The cafè used to be filled with people who are prominent in the arts and culture.
Apple had kept some art pieces seen in the former communal place. The local restorers helped Apple showcase even paintings dating back to the 1900s. The same has been done in the Champs Élysées store and the Carnegie Library store, which won architectural recognition, as per Apple Insider.
Other Apple Stores in Historic Location
Aside from the Via del Corso in Rome, according to Tech Radar, Apple has other stores that, likewise, were located in iconic structures.
In particular, the Apple store in New York is located in the Grand Central Terminal. It is reported that the tech giant has spent a whopping $2.5 million just to renovate the said retail place.
Moreover, the Apple flagship store in Milan is found at the Piazza del Liberty.
