Samsung silently filed for a trademark on May 18, of what could be the first rollable phone available commercially -- the "Samsung Galaxy Z Roll."
The South Korean giant behind the successful Samsung Galaxy Z Fold is leading in the foldable segment of smartphones, according to GizmoChina.
Other brands are only at the early stage or have yet to release their own. In particular, Apple will reportedly be debuting its own, in 2023. It will be paired with a rumored stylus -- like what the Samsung Galaxy Note flaunts.
The rollable phone of Samsung was one of the highlights of Display Week 2021, along with the multi-foldable phone, The Verge reported.
The 7.2-inch big triple-fold phone could be a tablet when spread out, and a smartphone when folded. The S-Foldable has been filed for a trademark, earlier in April, on both South Korea and the European Union.
Is It a Hint of a Future Rollable Phone?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, on the flip side, has only been filed for trademark this month. LetsGoDigital first reported that Samsung Electronics arranged it at the European Union of Intellectual Property Office.
It is the first time that Samsung Electronics has officially made a move with the rollable phone. The fancy technology has only been flexed by Samsung Display, a separate division of the company, as a concept.
The latest development may hint that soon it will be more than just a concept. It may also go the other way as it is still too early to say.
What to Expect with Samsung Galaxy Z Roll?
The newly trademarked phone, as Samsung Display has shown as a concept, will be similar to LG's canceled device. However, none of it is still assured as Samsung Electronic has not yet made any official announcements.
In case you missed it, LG has also announced its plan to launch a rollable device in March that will put the folding phones away from the spotlight. However, the ambition surrendered as the company dissolved its smartphone division in the same month.
As mentioned, the Galaxy Z Roll, like LG's, is expected to carry a screen that extends from the right side. Users will then get more screen space to enjoy.
