Google Cloudtop is a virtual desktop tool that is based on the cloud that did not receive much recognition as it was kept from the public and was exclusive to Google's employees since 2017. Initially, it was perceived as a threat or rival to that of Microsoft's Windows Virtual Desktop and several of Amazon's applications for a virtual office setup but is not available to the public.
The pandemic has pushed massive corporations to work at home and continue the daily operations while everyone was restricted by the lockdowns to avoid spreading and getting infected by the COVID-19 virus. Through the internet and the use of computers or company-issued laptops, people were able to get back to work and be productive at home.
Home productivity has been aided largely by Microsoft and Amazon applications that are available to the public, which is used until the present, as companies are still bordering on staying at home as vaccines get distributed. Virtual Office Desktops has taken the work-from-home experience to the next level, allowing companies to make the most of the situation.
Google's Cloudtop
Google has had the virtual cloud-based office desktop application called "Cloudtop," since 2017, and has been the primary office application for the company to use for its employees. According to CNBC, it performs a similar function to that of the applications and software from other technology companies like Microsoft and Amazon.
Despite being launched almost four years ago, the company has decided to make it exclusive for Google employees and has maintained its software within the Mountain View giant's possession. Since the pandemic's start, Google has reportedly led people to other developers' and service providers' applications instead of promoting their virtual office tool.
Why Was it Kept from the Public?
A Google spokesperson said that while the company has recognized the need for virtual workspaces via the cloud, it remained to promote third-party ones, after its 2018 research that looked into relationships with other companies. The study entitled "From Corp to Cloud: Google's Virtual Desktops" explored the need for virtual desktops, in which Google provides only the cloud, and others use their software.
The use of third-party applications for virtual desktops would promote the use of the public cloud from Google, and also empower the said applications that are also clients of the company. The start of the pandemic has caused these companies to grow as a virtual desktop during the early days of COVID-19, and also the company's cloud services.
