Apple TV is rumored to have a major upgrade for its systems that would feature a high refresh rate of 120Hz to match the 4K video streaming quality with its box, as revealed by the tvOS 14.5 Beta Code. This was not available before, particularly as 4K only supports a low refresh rate of 30Hz and alternatively, a 60Hz for 1080 FHD.
Apple TV Refresh Rate
To compensate for a refresh rate, Apple's settings suggest that people dial down to 1080p full high definition (FHD) to get a higher refresh rate, at the expense of losing several resolutions from a streaming experience. Despite being 4K ready, Apple TVs can only support a 30Hz rate for its display, which is not ideal for the high-quality video that is streamed.
While this is ideal for most televisions in the market, the transition to 4K technology is now apparent and observed worldwide, and most smart televisions feature the latest 4K video quality at an affordable price. This means that TV boxes would soon need to catch up, and this includes the black box from Apple, which has been around since 2007.
Apple TV 120Hz Refresh Rate Discovered in tvOS 14.5
Much like the iPhone's operating system, the iOS 14.5 is still in Beta Testing Mode for developers and public beta users but has not yet seen its expected public release despite the long wait. According to 9 to 5 Mac, they have discovered something new within the Pineboard (Apple TV's name in the interface), particularly in the beta software.
The leak revealed that the Apple TV+'s next upgrade would feature a high refresh rate of 120Hz, which would be a new venture for Apple due to its devices having the borderline of 60Hz rate despite the latest releases. Additionally, the code was discovered in tvOS 14.5 which is still in the beta testing phase, suggesting that Apple is planning for its release.
The Apple TV has been slated for its awaited upgrade and new model, but it has not surfaced yet from Apple, especially as its update is predicted frequently by leakers and speculators. Apple is still expected to release a new Apple TV 4K, and the public is expecting the latest technology to come along with it, including a higher refresh rate.
Which Apple Devices Have 120Hz Refresh Rate?
Currently, Apple is short of high refresh rates for its devices despite it being the latest display and screen specifications, especially for premium variant devices and top-of-the-line technologies. The Apple iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max only has 60Hz, along with the latest MacBook Pro M1 and iPad Air 4.
The iPad Pro 2020 Model is the only device with the highest refresh rate of 120Hz, making it the fastest screen display among Apple's list of devices. According to Mac Rumors, the Cupertino giant plans to upgrade its displays soon. It would start with Apple's iPhone lineup, which was initially rumored to use Samsung's LTPO OLED with a 120Hz of refresh rate.
