In December 2020, Netflix first discovered that it could add a video format feature similar to TikTok. The users in his feature can view short clips on their mobile devices. Now, "Fast Laughs" became an official addition to Netflix, which works like a collection of funny videos.
Netflix Launches 'Fast Laughs'
At the moment, the app is only limited to iOS devices, but users can expect that it will roll out in Android in the future. USA Today reported that users can use the features like the one in TikTok where they can view, react, and share the short videos in their feeds.
Since Netflix is focused more on media viewing, you can also add your favorite movie to your watchlist. To watch a program, simply click the "Play" button.
If you are using iOS devices, you can now watch Netflix films like "Murder Mystery." If you feel that you want to relax while watching sitcom movies, "The Crew" is already available for viewing.
There are also snippets of some stand-up comedians such as Ali Wong and Kevin Hart. To access the feature, go to the bottom menu, located next to the "Coming Soon" tab.
Similar Feature to 'Fast Laughs'
Netflix told TechCrunch that the "Fast Laughs" feature is not the first short-video update that Netflix introduced. A feature called "Previews'' is the first one that the video-viewing platform launched. The new feature looks appealing since it popularizes its vertical design, which is borrowed from TikTok.
The format is the same as the Chinese video-sharing service as users can swipe the screen vertically. They can use emojis in "Fast Laughs", the same feature in other social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.
When Netflix ran an app test for "Fast Laughs," they found out that the short videos can only last from 15 to 45 seconds. Since the company wants a longer time bonding through these funny clips, they remove the limitation when it comes to the video length.
Netflix said that even though the feature is now available for some users, they still needed to restrict the audience who uses it since children could access the platform.
Of course, sensitive content not appropriate for the children will not be shown in the profiles for kids. For a much secure and safer viewing, contents can be filtered according to the viewers' maturity rating levels.
For Kim Ho, the product designer of Netflix, the company aims to immerse its users in an intuitive discovery through comedic clips across all mobile platforms. Ho, who also helped design Facebook and Instacart, added that they will work hard to give what is best for the users through the user interface's minimalist design.
Even though the latest feature was not directly addressed to compete with TikTok, the fact that its design closely resembles the platform sparks a healthy competition between these two video-sharing companies.
People always look for an app that could give them happiness by viewing clips for a short period of time. They can see those contents in TikTok. Now, they could test it via "Fast Laughs" for a more diverse environment.
In the upcoming months, it is expected that Netflix will launch the feature for Android devices.
