Next-Gen iPhones to Have New MagSafe Charging Magnetic Ports; Will Apple's Smartphone Still Be Water-Proof?

It is expected to be integrated into the next-generation iPhone models. However, there is no update yet if it will be available on the upcoming iPhone 13. Apple submitted its new patent on Tuesday, Feb. 2, to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

"Today the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially granted Apple a patent that relates to various styles of smart connectors," said the company via Patently Apple.

"While wireless charging is the direction Apple is taking, magnetic connectors are still being contemplated by Apple," added the tech giant.

Apple's upcoming MagSafe charging ports

Based on the company's new patent, the next-gen iPhone smartphones could have a three-pinned MagSafe charger, just like the previous MacBook laptop versions. On the other hand, Apple also revealed different pin designs that would connect that charger to the device.

The first image shows that the charging port has a curve design where the MagSafe charger's round-edge would fit in. Meanwhile, the second photo shows that the next-gen iPhone would have three magnetic connection that is flat. This design is expected to maintain that water-proof characteristic of the upcoming iPhone models.

According to Mac Rumors' latest report, the patent itself doesn't mention or reference an ‌iPhone‌ by name, but an image in the filing depicts what seems to be the bottom of an ‌iPhone‌ with the ‌MagSafe‌ charger concept.

How the new MagSafe charging port works

Apple's latest patent explained that the new magnetic MagSafe charging port will allow the device to detach from the charger if the user accidentally tripped easily. This will prevent heavy damage. The patent could entail Apple's long-term vision of turning the current ‌MagSafe‌ charge on the back of the device as a place for accessories, including a new battery pack.
