Blizzard Celebrates 30 Years With 'Diablo II: Resurected:' Everything We Know So Far

After 30 years of making games, Blizzard finally announces the long-awaited game "Diablo II: Resurrected" at the Blizzcon this year on an online event due to COVID. Even though people could not physically attend the convention, fans could not keep their excitement for the game's long-rumored remaster.

What We Know About 'Diablo II: Resurrected'

"Diablo II: Resurrected" is a remaster of "Diablo II" and the expansion "Diablo II: Lord of Destruction" that was first released in 2000. Blizzard looked for help from one of the greatest remaster teams in the industry, Vicarious Visions. Both game developers merge into Blizzard Entertainment and are currently under their parent company, Activision, after working with "Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2," and "Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy," as CBR reports.

The original game fans will be happy for "Diablo II: Resurrected" as the studio implemented a 70/30 scheme for the remaster. 70% of the game's look and feel should stay as it is and give the classic sense, while 30 percent brings something fresh to better the experience.

The original "Diablo II" was in 2D; the remaster will run in a 3D engine that has reimagined many iconic characters, locations, loots, and monsters. This means players will notice more details in the game's surroundings and better gameplay while preserving the original aesthetic. "Diablo II: Resurrected" will come with a Legacy Toggle feature the enables players to switch between the classic look and the latest iteration.

"Diablo II: Resurrected" will still run on 25 frames on the combat system, while visuals will run at current frame rates. A controller support system is installed to the remaster, though the game developers intend to keep the mouse-keyboard gameplay setup similar to The Guardian reports.

Eight-player multiplayer, PvP, and trading will also make a comeback to "Diablo II: Resurrected." The most significant change related to the flow and management of loot is the new shared stash box, allowing players to easily share items between different characters. Also, there will be an option to play the game online or offline. When playing the game online, players will be using global servers to play with anyone worldwide.

"Diablo II: Resurrected" is currently planned for a release sometime this year. While there is no official launch date, Blizzard has announced that an Alpha test will be conducted in the months ahead of launch. Players can sign up for the PC Alpha on the official site.

A Word From Blizzard Entertainment

GameSpot was interviewed with "Diablo II: Resurrected" designer Andre Abrahamian and explained that the original game's mysterious and outdated elements are still meaningful. Abrahamian states that when the game developers revisited "Diablo II" after 20 years, they saw that there are still many great elements in the game and enjoyment. "So, one of our game pillars is to maintain the fun [of the original]," the game designer stated.

Abrahamian continued that even though "Diablo II" is a dated game, there are still many interesting design elements present in the game that still carry on to this day and many story moments for players.

Also, Blizzard talked about how "Diablo II" will make its first appearance away from the PC. The developers stated that Vicarious Visions has numerous experiences with consoles and combined their knowledge to sync with what the developers have done on the original game.
