South Africa Launches Self-Registration Portal

In a report by News24, South African Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize said that the self-registration portal is to help the department guarantee that the vaccines would be delivered at the right time at the right site.

Minister Mkhize has also done a live demonstration of the portal this Wednesday morning, February 3, 2021.

Based on the report, it seems like the portal is open for healthcare workers only at the moment, which is part the country's phase one of the entire COVID-19 vaccination program, which is also common in various parts of the world to ensure the protection of medical frontliners who are battling face to face with the unseen enemy.

As the Electronic Vaccine Data Systems launches, 34,000 health workers have already signed up.

According to the health minister, the self-registration portal would only take two minutes to complete and would require less than a megabyte of data to access.

The Start of Phase One

The minister said that the launching of the portal is the beginning of "a complete health information system" that begins with their registration to acquiring certification.

"The system can capture the relevant metrics of all South Africans that will be vaccinated; ensure vaccinees, are contactable and alerted to optimize adherence to the regimen, and complete the certification process such that vaccine certificates are easy to obtain for vaccinees and authorities that may require certification," Minister Mkhize said.

The department encourages every health worker in the country, whether clinical or non-clinical, private or public, persal or non-persal, to register on the system.

It can be accessed via the Health Department's website here.

The report also says that funeral workers and traditional healers of South Africa are also encouraged to register as they are part of the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

Prioritizing Healthcare Workers

To prepare for the registration, it will ask a few personal details, including an active phone number where they can contact and notify the vaccinees of changes or when the vaccines are available as well as their schedule.

Details of the workers' employment will also be required

After signing up, a confirmation would be sent via SMS through the number provided on the form, three minutes or so after registration.

Although anyone can access the self-registration portal, it guarantees that the people who sign up for the first phase are actually health care workers by comparing the data provided by facility data, persal system, employer data, private systems, and other data that are acquired from healthcare regulatory bodies.

The minister said that the portal will prioritize healthcare workers for the period of the country's COVID-19 vaccination program phase one.

Nevertheless, Minister Mkhize guaranteed that no one will be denied of vaccination even if they have not registered via the portal, although it is still encouraged that every healthcare worker does to help the government how many vaccines will be needed at a site.
