What is Apple TV Plus?

As reported by CNET, Apple TV Plus is Apple's subscription video streaming service featuring original TV shows and movies. With a budget of $6 billion to attract some of the biggest stars of Hollywood, Apple TV Plus is one of the participants of the streaming wars.

This battle includes HBO Max, Disney Plus, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and NBCUniversal's Peacock. Massive corporations poured billions of dollars into their ambition to shape the future of television.

Apple TV Plus started with "The Morning Show" starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, with a budget of $300 million. Apple TV Plus launched with only 9 programs, but since then expanded to more than 40 shows and movies.

Unlike its rivals, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus does not have a massive back catalog of things to watch. The streaming service focuses on original contents, even if that meant they have less programming for their subscribers to choose from compared to their competitors.

However Apple changed their stance at the start of 2021 and they began licensing older movies and shows.

So how much is the service? Apple TV Plus costs $5 a month, or $50 a year, and it offers a seven-day free trial. The service is cheaper than its rival like Disney Plus which costs $7 a month.

Other streaming services that are based on cable networks like HBO Max or Showtime is more expensive, with HBO Max costing $15 a month and Showtime costing $9 a month. Netflix, the most popular streaming service, costs $13 a month.

People who purchase Apple products like iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Apple TV or Mac will qualify for a free subscription for a year. Those who bought Apple products before September 10, 2019 are not given the one year free subscription for Apple TV Plus.
