Tesla has recently lost their engineering director known as Joseph Mardall who has reportedly helped produced what Elon Musk called "some of the best engineering" that he has seen in quite a long time.

Tesla Model Y

According to the story by Electrek, with the Tesla Model Y last year, Tesla has been able to introduce a number of newer design improvements. Tesla's new heat pump is considered to be one of the main improvements. A heat pump is known as a particular device responsible for transferring heat energy coming from a heat source to what is known as the thermal reservoir.

This is the device that was missing in the Tesla Model 3 during that time and it is said to make vehicles function more efficiently within colder climates. This can affect the total range of any of the vehicles. Although there is still more focus on the EV range.

After Tesla had introduced the very same heat pump to their Model 3, the owners were then able to compare the efficiency when it came to climate control with and without the Tesla new heat pump. The latter showed much more efficiency.

Elon Musk elaborated on Twitter the design of Tesla Model Y's heat pump saying the PCB design techniques were applied to create a certain heat exchanger that is physically impossible by normal means. The heat pump also has its own local heating loop to spool up both fast and extend the usable temperature range. The octavalve is known to be pretty special as well. Basically, Elon Musk noted that the team did great work and that there was no credit to him.

Tesla engineer Joseph Mardall

The Tesla engineering director, Joseph Mardall, has had quite an experience as a Cambridge and MIT-educated mechanical engineer who worked as an aerodynamicist at McLaren Racing before finally joining Tesla. He had spent 10 years at Tesla contributing a long list of benefits for the company like the Model Y's heat pump and others according to his LinkedIn profile.

The engineer had publicly announced that he will be leaving Tesla in order to join Zipline. This is a particular startup that is developping drones fore medical product deliveries.

Zipline drone company

Mardell gave the announcement on LinkedIn saying after 10 years at Tesla, he is now super excited to start the next chapter of his career as the head of engineering over at Zipline where he will be working with a team of committed and talented engineers in order to provide every human being on Earth access to instant vital medical supplies.

He then stated that the next 5 years are going to change the whole world and that he cannot wait. He said that they are hiring for all roles across engineering in general and that they would love to hear from them. He ended his statement with "come fly with me!"
