The Speedmaster MoonWatch Professional Inspiration
According to Raynald Aeschlimann, Omega's president and CEO, "When updating a sacred timepiece like the Speedmaster Moonwatch, every detail must be true to its original spirit. This chronograph is recognized the world over, so we've approached its design with the most sincere respect, while taking its movement to the next level."
The newly released Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is inspired by Omega's long lunar legacy. According to AirSpace, the Omega Speed Master dates back to 1969 when the Omega Chronograph was brought by 11 astronauts which includes the famous Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. To date, Omega's Moonwatch series has been flight-qualified by NASA for safe use in its missions.
According to Jim Lovell, a Gemini and Apollo Astronaut who flew to the moon twice, "I would suspect that the longest piece of NASA equipment - since it has been doing a very good job for all these years- is really the Speedmaster." in an interview via a video released by Forbes.
A Deeper Look into the Speedmaster MoonWatch Professional
The new Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional retains the asymmetrical case and three subdials that have become a trademark of the classic Apollo-worn chronograph. It also has the dot over 90 ("DON") and a dot diagonal to 70 on the anodized aluminum bezel ring, details that have grown to be iconic among the watch's fans and aficionados.
Innovations to the new Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional include subtle changes to the watchs' minute track. As compared to its predecessor that had five, it is now split into only three divisions. It now has the well-known dot over 90, also known as the DON to seasoned watch aficionados, as well sa a dot diagonal to 70 placed on the anodized aluminum bezel ring. Its difference is subtle, although the nuances are something to look forward to for watch enthusiasts. The previous models had the dot next to 90, and not over 90. The first iterations of the time keeper also constitutes a new step dial and double bevel caseback display.
The new models has progressed its performance with the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 Movement to display the most accurate time possible even in unfavorable environments and extreme magnetic fields. It is also hailed as the "Master Chronometer" in the Swiss watch industry with its precise measure and magnetic resistance.
Design-wise, it has a similar bracelet with the past Moonwatch models, but has a redesigned clasp sealed with a seamless Omega logo covered on a Satin finish. The collection comes in Omega Sedna Gold that retails for $34,800 as well as the Omega Canopus gold that retails for $45,300.
The Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional upgrade, although made more modern and innovative has managed to stick to its lunar legacy inspiration, and yet is made better than ever.
