Kirin 9020: Huawei Mate 50 Series Chipset Might Be First to Hold 3nm Processor

A few months ago, Huawei released its Kirin 9000 processors with two variants, namely the Kirin 9000 and the Kirin 9000E which is only found in the Mate 40 Series. The Kirin 9000 was launched using the 5nm processor suitable for Android device. Most people expect that Huwaei will be dealing with the 5nm for a long time. However, the latest news gives us hope that there can be a huge leap to 3nm for the next mobile chipset, hopefully by 2022. Possibly, the Kirin 2020 will appear alongside the Mate 50 series by 2022.

Huawei's Kirin Legacy Continues

However, it is not hidden to the public that they are currently facing issues with the US Department of commerce. According to World Today News, Huwawei has been sanctioned by the US Department of Commerce and should not be able to purchase Kirin processors from TSMC. This statement is reflective of the company's previous statement that Kirin 9000 could be their last Kirin processor. However, a leak from a well-known whistleblower named Rodent950 on Twitter has revealed that Huwawei will be releasing a next Generation flagship processor known as Kirin 9020. Previously, the twitter user has launched the news with the processor being named as Kirin 9010. He then updated his tweet saying, the processor is named Kirin 9020 and not 9010.

The Twitter user further updated the news by saying Kirin 9020 will be powered by the 3nm process, which is ultimately more advanced than that of Kirin 9000's 5nm process. However, due to the current sanctions being faced by Huawei, the development and testing process will take a long time to finish. According to the TSMC and Samsung, the 3nm launch will not be made possible until about 2022. If the leak is indeed true, then Huawei's 9000 processor may still take a long time to hang in the shelf, with a few upgrades here and there.

Huawei may Be the First to Launch 3NM

What's more interesting about the news is that Huawei may be the first to produce the 3nm as other manufacturers are still on their way to development. Qualcomm, for example which has a chipset with a 5nm processor to be announced later this year, also seems to follow suit with switching to a 3nm processor.

On the other hand, reports show that Samsung plans to skip on the 4nm process phase and jump straight to the 3nm. Apple is also trying to seal a deal of having a 3nm processor with TSMC that is also expected to arrive in 2022. If development speeds up with Huawei, it may be the forerunner in the game.

Huawei may still be facing some issues as of the time being, but reports show there is a promising comback for the year 2022.
