While 2020 has been quite a surprising year, another trend starts to pick up on Twitter which is "super gonorrhea", a particular kind of infection that is supposedly sexually transmitted and is now being related to the antibiotic overuse for Covid-19. Super gonorrhea, which is supposedly a result of the original bacteria, called Neisseria gonorrhoeae, will develop a higher resistance level to the antibiotics that are normally used for the treatment of this infection namely ceftriaxone and azithromycin.

What is super gonorrhea?

According to the story by Forbes, the particular N. gonorrhoeae is actually listed on the World Health Organization or WHO's database as one of the world's most dangerous superbugs. The article suggests that having the disease on the superbugs list is as dangerous as supposedly having an infection in which scientists and medical professionals have run out of ways to try and cure.

The trend reportedly started out from a certain WHO spokesperson giving his statement to The Sun. The statement noted out that the whole overuse of azithromycin as well as the lack of services in order to treat the sexually transmitted infections or STIs during the whole coronavirus pandemic might just be fueling a much higher rise of super gonorrhea.

Instead, the entire use of the azithromycin can select even more resistant versions of the gonorrhea. It was also noted earlier this year that there was a buzz around the use of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin as a supposed treatment for COVID-19. This was reportedly even before the release of the well-constructed and more executed clinical studies had been done in order to find out the safety of using these medications for the treatment of the SARS-CoV2 infections.

Ever since then, these clinical studies have found out that there is not enough evidence that actually support such use. As its result, the official National Institutes of Health Covid-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel now actually recommends against the supposed use of chloroquine or even hydroxychloroquine even with or without azithromycin for the main treatment of COVID-19 within both the non-hospitalized and the hospitalized patients.

Super gonorrhea treatment

Recently, on December 18, the official CDC or Center for Disease Control Prevention released guidelines for the treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea. Instead of using a two-drug approach. This approach uses both azithromycin as well as ceftriaxone, the official CDC are now actually recommending the simple use of 500 mg injection of ceftriaxone alone.

One problem with the whole COVID-19 pandemic is that many other pathogens have decided not to take a break. Since a lot of travel has been restricted and has even shut down a number of the "non-essential" health services or even dissuading a number of patients from actually seeking medical care, this might just result to people running around and with their own untreated infections or even trying to self-treat with some potentially inappropriate type of antibiotics.
