Popular chat application, Facebook Messenger, appears to not be working and left millions of people worldwide frustrated and confused. The system interruption started 6AM EST and now people are unable to use the service. The application also won't download sent videos and photos.
Facebook Messenger down
According to the website DownDetector, which tracks the server status of online services based on its mentions on social media platforms, Facebook Messenger can't be assess in the Philippines, Europe, Australia, North America and other parts in Asia.
At its peak, 2,400 Facebook Messenger users were complaining every minute about being unable to send messages, login, send pictures, send videos and receive calls.
The crash of the app appears to have started around the UK and European countries such as Belgium and France before spreading to other countries like Australia, the Philippines and the United States. The country that has been hit the most, with large areas showing issues with Facebook Messenger, is Poland.
Users took their sentiments to DownDetector's forum pages and stated that messages are not sending and that the issue has been going on for hours now.
Facebook-owned site, Instagram, appears to be down as well. There are some users that said their Instagram app and even their Facebook app stopped working too, according to The Sun.
Aside from DownDetector, IsTheServiceDown and IsItDown have also confirmed an increase of reports regarding the system problem of Facebook Messenger and Instagram.
Currently, Facebook has not released any official statement on what is causing the issue and there is also no timeline given on when it is going to be fixed. Users vented their frustrations on Twitter, making the Facebook Messenger trend worldwide.
Twitter users have been asking if there is a problem with the chat app, as they can't send messages and receive calls. Some also said that the reinstalling the app did not work, as theirs are still acting up.
Facebook Messenger's history
In August 2020, Slash Gear reported that Facebook Messenger suffered an issue and also acted up by preventing users from logging in, receiving calls and sending messages.
At the time, Facebook Messenger users were greeted with only a blank, white page. Even if the users refreshed it repeatedly, it did not solve the issue. The problem was fixed after a couple of hours, but Facebook did not say what caused the issue.
In September 2020, Instagram was hit by a technological issue, with users unable to log in or access their feed. The issues were resolved in just an hour and Facebook back them blamed an errant network-configuration change.
According to DownDetector, the user reports of errors on the app began in the afternoon of September 17, with more than 75,000 problems reported. The issue appeared to have prevalent in the United States, with some reports in Europe and Asia.
After an hour, the reports dropped from 75,000 to 5,000, and it showed that Instagram had began recovering from the outages. Instagram has more than 1 billion active users worldwide.
The current issue with Facebook Messenger is one of the longest system issue in the app history.
