Looking Glass Portrait: Experience Holographic Videos, Photos and 3D Models on Cellphone-Like Screen

The company known for creating and designing personal holographic displays, Looking Glass Factory, just launched a new product called Looking Glass Portrait.

How the Holographic Glass Portrait Works

Looking Glass Portrait has a smaller screen than the regular Looking Glass Factory product and it is more affordable than the other light field display. It can operate as a standalone device but users can twist things up and display portrait mode pictures from smartphones to create holograms.

The product displays holographic videos, photos and 3D models. With a 58 degree viewing cone, you can experience a 3D video or a hologram but it can be viewed by a lot of people. There is no need for you to wear any special glasses or hook it up to any other device.

Smaller sized holographic light field is not new, there are other products that offers the same features like the Sony Spatial Reality Display. But what sets this product apart from the rest is the price, while its competitors costs around $500 to $3,000, the Looking Glass Portrait costs $349.

Looking Glass Factory uses a combination of light field and volumetric display technologies for its specific display. This means that the display is refracting light through the glass and it is also projecting light to different parts of the screen at the same time to create the 3D image.

The product has 45 to 100 different views of 3D scenes to make a hologram and this feature is perfect for detailed captures. It has a 7.9 inch display, which is around the same size of a regular phone screen. It also comes with USB-C, HDMI and 3.5 stereo audio jack ports so you can plug in media on the device easily.

Looking Glass Portrait is compact compared to the previous Looking Glass displays that were launched in 2018. The old model was horizontally-oriented while the new one is vertical.

Even though you need to have a power source for the display to work, the product has a built-in Raspberry Pi 4 for standalone use.

Looking Glass Factory uses Holographic Studio software, so it is possible for users to upload photos, videos and 3D models to the product. Aside from the videos and photos, you can also connect the product to third-party devices such as Intel's RealSense, Microsoft's Azure Kinect and Leap Motion Controller so you can have a more interactive hologram.
