Warning: Don't Get Apple Big Sur Upgrade with a 128GB Mac

For Apple users that have heard of the benefits of the Big Sur for Mac, it might be tempting to get the upgrade right away but there is actually a huge set back for those planning to get this upgrade with units having only 128GB. According to an article by Macworld, users will have to have at least 35GB of free space in order for them to install the update!

Apple Big Sur free upgrade

Ever since the Big Sur came out and Apple has announced that Mac users are free to get this upgrade, there has beena surge in reports of certain difficulties that users experience when trying to get the Big Sur. An article by TechRadar shows a few possible solutions to the more basic problems that users could potentially experience.

The report made by Macworld initially detailed how the Big Sur update needed at least 12.2GB of space in order for it to be downloaded but once finally launched, the update is said to require another 10GB of space! At the end of the whole installation, the Big Sur update is said to take at least 35GB of space in order for it to work.

This makes it extremely harder for older models with only 128GB SSDs installed to get this update. Nowadays, getting higher SSDs is pretty standard and it's pretty rare to get a unit that is only 128GB in initial SSD memory. However, the older models might have a hard time. For those who have Apple Macs that only contain 128GB SSD, it's not practical to get the update.

Although the new update is said to bring quite a number of new and interesting features, for those who only have 128GB, they will have to give up a little less than a third of their entire space. This is excluding all of the apps, the files, and all the other data necessary or the unit itself to run.

Is getting the Apple Big Sur worth it?

Although clearing up space in an Apple Mac is quite easy, this does not mean that everyone can clear 35GB of space just so easily. This is still a lot of space at the end of the day. Think about it, if a certain song will take about 5Mb, this means that there are 200 songs in a single GB. This means that for 35GB, users are giving up 7,000 songs for the whole update.

Around 7,000 songs is more than the majority of people can remember or even listen to in their entire lifetime. This just shows how big the requirements for the Apple Big Sur are and users should think twice before getting it especially if they are functioning on smaller memory for their unit. Of course, at the end of the day, the final decision is still left to the owner of the unit as to whether or not they think that despite the huge memory requirements, the Big Sur is still worth it.
