Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will conclude this year with the last eight episodes as Netflix decided to end the show as announced on Wednesday, July 8. It is not clear why Netflix canceled the series, but its last eight episodes will be aired later this year as part of Season 4, as reported by the TVWeb.
Sabrina will join the other Netflix shows being canceled this year. The other shows are Osmosis (premiered on March 2019), Turn Up Charlie (March 2019), Marianne (September 2019), Mortel (November 2019), Soundtrack (December 2019), V Wars (December 2019), and Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show (December 2019).
Also canceled are shows that premiered in January this year. These include Messiah, AJ, and the Queen, Spinning Out, Next In Fashion and October Faction. Unlike Sabrina which already has three seasons, the 12 shows were all canceled after one season only. Meanwhile, popular Netflix shows are also canceled. The upcoming seasons for Ozark, The Kominsky Method, and Dead to Me will be their final seasons.
The acclaimed series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina piloted in Netflix in 2018. It is a spinoff on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa created a different story from the original, which earned praises from viewers and alike.
With Netflix's history of ending fan-favorite shows too soon, Sabrina's four-season run can still be regarded as a success. While there is still no exact date for the Season 4 premiere, the final episodes will be aired this year.
Sabrina's cancellation came after Katy Keene was called off
The news of Sabrina being canceled comes days after another Aguirre-Sacasa's creation Katy Keene was also axed after just one season. The playwright was also supposed to have his pilot episode for a new series The Brides to be aired in ABC.
Nevertheless, Aguirre-Sacasa will remain busy as Riverdale's showrunner. The series remained popular on The CW with its fifth season already scheduled to premiere in 2021.
Aguirre-Sacasa said on a tweet that he was honored to have worked with the Sabrina series as the cast has been a joy to work with. "I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show," Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement.
He is also grateful to his partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television, and Archie Comics for allowing them to create a story they wanted to tell "the way we wanted to tell it."
The Chilling Adventures series was originally intended to air on The CW. However, it was moved to Netflix ahead before the airing of its pilot episode. The series stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, and Michelle Gomez. Set in the Greendale town, the series is about the teenager Sabrina Spellman as inspired by the Archie Comics character.
Sabrina must reunite her dual half-witch, half-mortal nature while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the humans in general.
According to Netflix, the last season will have the Eldritch Terrors arrive on Greendale. The coven must combat each terrifying threat including The Weird, The Returned, and The Darkness until they battle against The Void, which is regarded as the End of All Things.
