CES 2015: Razer Forge TV: $99 Micro Gaming Console Running on Android

Razer has taken the wraps off a line of products that revolve around its Forge TV media box, which runs on the Android TV OS.

The new gaming console consists of the Razer Forge TV microconsole, Razer Serval, Razer Cortex and Razer Turret.

While the microconsole's primary purpose is playing games, the Razer Forge TV will also support a plethora of entertainment apps such as YouTube, Hulu and Crackle. Users will be able to access these apps via Google Play.

It is not known at the moment if Razer Forge TV will also support HBO Go, Netflix or Amazon Instant Video.

"Razer Forge TV is a device that is able to bring together the most popular elements of an entertainment center," said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. "It powers popular music and movie apps and plays Android TV games that an entire family can enjoy. For the hardcore gaming audience, it will bring PC gaming to the couch. Razer Forge TV is what we see as the future of consoles."

Forge TV is somewhat similar to Google's Nexus Player in the sense that it can be hooked up to your television. It will then enable users to download apps and mobile games. The difference, however, is that Forge TV is also able to display PC games on the television's screen when both the devices are linked to the same network at home.

Razer claims that Forge TV will offer users "cutting-edge performance with quad-core processing." The microconsole will have 16GB of internal storage and will be able to play games from Google Play on bigger screens for up to four players.

Thanks to Razer Serval, which is a Bluetooth gaming controller, users will be able to play games and navigate the microconsole. The controller will cost $50 extra and has two thumb sticks, a trigger and bumper buttons. What is incredible about this controller is that it can remember nearly four unique device pairings and can switch between the Forge TV, PC, tablet or smartphone.

The Forge TV mini-console is slated to go on sale in the first quarter of 2015. It will be priced at $99.99.
