Having barreled through at least five release dates already, it sounds like the Assassin's Creed movie may have finally landed on a definite, real deal, we're-not-kidding-this-time release date.
At least until it gets moved again.
According to The Wrap, the final release date has been announced as Wednesday, December 21, 2016. Michael Fassbender has been attached for over two years to star in the movie, but the project has gone through a number of writers, producers and directors. Much of that can probably be chalked up to Ubisoft's uncompromising vision for the film, which the video game giant has insisted on maintaining complete control of.
Currently in the director's chair is Justin Kurzel, an unknown whose credits include a few indie flicks you've never heard of and a new adaptation of Macbeth, starring Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and David Thewlis that's scheduled for later this year. The script has been rewritten and rewritten, but the current credits go to Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who wrote Exodus: Gods and Kings.
Assassin's Creed will be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Along with this announcement, Fox also revealed new release dates for Channing Tatum's Gambit (October 7, 2016), Hugh Jackman's The Greatest Showman On Earth (December 25, 2016), Fantastic Four 2 (June 2, 2017) and the third Planet of the Apes film (July 14, 2017).
