The sole purpose was to bring a brand new feel to Overwatch
Scott Mercer, Overwatch's Principal Game Designer introduced the plan of implementing Hero Pools in the attempt to keep the ranked matches in-game a little bit more unpredictable and exciting for all players, saying that every week, when players get into Overwatch, it should feel very brand new and fresh.
This basically means that they will be removing four heroes each week from the competitive roster, one tank, one support, and two damage heroes. Players will be stuck with the remaining for at least two weeks at a time.
This whole concept was gathered from numerous feedbacks from players all of the world who have shared their thoughts on how the game did not change and was stale especially on ranked matches or competitive play. Blizzard had tried balancing some strengths and weaknesses but overall, was not good enough and they felt a change was needed to be added.
There are pros and a whole lot more cons to this new feature
The Hero Pool will force gamers to play with heroes that they have little experience with or has never played with at all which could help increase the diversity of the heroes during matches. Though this also has a negative factor and effect in ranked matches as players with less and no experience can cause the games to end and collapse in a very bad way.
Some players might have a hard time adjusting to new heroes they have never touched before and might cause imbalance and defeats in the long run, which of course does not include Flexi players.
Since Hero Pools are in its testing phase, there are a lot of things that are left unclear. One of the biggest issues in Overwatch is the lack of tanks and support characters when compared to damage. This means that if one tank is banned, there will be a significant decrease in hero choices. Similar to support heroes.
Season 21 of Competetive has now launched and everyone's either too excited or too bummed about this new feature. Only time will tell if this will actually stay in-game or if players might start an outbursts to get the whole thing removed and disabled. For now, gamers will just have to get used to playing different and new heroes for at least a few weeks and decide whether or not its good for Overwatch as a whole.
