Indie game developers Other Ocean Interactive has been working on the MediEvil remake ever since it was announced for PlayStation 4 in 2017, and today, reviews are coming out as the game is set to release on Friday, Oct. 25.
So, what are reviews saying about the game, and what can we expect from it?
If there is one thing all the reviews do agree on, it's that the MediEvil remake is a lot like the original game of the same title that was released in 1998 on the classic PS1; it's so close that you can even use a walkthrough made for the original game.
Other Ocean and Sony had promised fans of the original game that they would stay true to the original game, and according to LAD Bible, they really did—even going as far as lifting the level geometry of the game so they can use it as a blueprint for the remake.
With that, we can see every zombie and every grave exactly where they originally were, keeping the remake as close as possible to the PS1 classic.
The developers do have to work on new backgrounds and details, but in general, the game has the same cartoonish and grungy vibe as before.
However, it seems like the developers have stuck way too close to the game's roots that even the issues on the original were retained.
That meant the combat was rough, but "basic" according to Metro, and that the camera work can be an issue when you're surrounded by undead foes, making it tough to swipe at enemies before they can gather around you and deal massive damage.
Since the PS4 game focuses on combat, the camera can render the game "unplayable" sometimes. Additionally, there is nothing much you can do in between fights, with level designs deemed as "bland" and "repetitive."
GamesRadar has also reported that they have encountered annoying glitches throughout the game but hoped that it all could be fixed in future updates.
MediEvil remake obviously had improved when it came to graphics and design, plus the indie developers did stay true to their promise, and if you love the cult classic, then you'll want to get this experience on PlayStation 4.
However, the graphics and design are the only improvements so far, and those who had played the game before its release were not a big fan of the overall experience.
MediEvil is set to release on PlayStation 4 on Oct. 25.
