Nintendo has released a new "Play With Friends" feature for Super Mario Maker 2 on Nintendo Switch. As the name suggests, it lets players play on levels together online.
While Super Mario Maker 2 launched with online co-op and competitive modes, players were limited to playing with random people via matchmaking.
Those who wanted to play with friends had no choice except local play. According to Nintendo World Report, the company did this so as to prevent people from teaming up to dominate global leaderboards.
Play With Friends In 'Super Mario Maker 2'
However, Nintendo eventually went against its initial decision and later promised to add the feature, which version 1.1.0 brings to the sandbox title. With this update, Super Mario Maker 2 players can now search their Switch friends list for someone to play with via either co-op or versus mode. This new mechanic works both for global and local play. Players can also select from courses uploaded to Course World or those saved to Coursebot.
In addition to being able to play with friends, this update also brings new features to "Nearby Play," adds "LAN Play," and throws in a list of Official Makers in the Leaderboards section that will include new courses plus "special ones created for collaborations or special events." What's more, the update also lets users use the touchscreen and button controls when creating courses in handheld mode.
Profiles have also been updated to display more information at a time, including a user's total number of First Clears. Moreover, players can now enjoy Super Mario Maker 2 with a horizontal Joy-Con controller in all modes. This should make it easier for people who'd much rather use a single Joy-Con when playing the game.
Super Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Maker 2, a sequel to Super Mario Maker released on the Wii U and 3DS several years back, has quickly become one of the best-selling and most popular titles for Nintendo Switch. The game allows anyone to create their own Super Mario levels using sprites and other elements found on previous Super Mario games. Anyone can go wild with level creation — sky's the limit. Someone even made a first-person dungeon crawler.
