Acer will be bringing a number of new devices to CES this year, the latest announcement being that it will be introducing the Aspire V 17 Nitro notebook with Intel RealSense 3D cameras.
The Nitro camera is able to perform sophisticated 3D scanning as well as motion tracking similar to that performed by Microsoft's Kinect line of motion sensing input devices.
"Acer believes three-dimensional computing offers unlimited potential for both professional and consumer uses," said Jerry Kao, president of Acer Notebook Business Group, in a statement. "Business applications include 3D modeling, mapping and architectural design, while the most popular consumer uses will likely include augmented reality gaming, and simple PC navigation and control."
The gaming computer also includes a 17.3-inch Full HD display, as well as other components that would be expected on a high-end computer, such as a quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU and a Nvidia GeForce GPU. It has up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal storage. It even includes a Blu-ray player.
Acer will also be introducing two games that support the hands-free motion sensing, including Warrior Wave, allowing the users to control the characters with their hands. Another app, called 3DMe, allows users to scan their profile and paste it onto various 3D characters.
"With Intel RealSense technology consumers will be able to control and interact with their computers in a natural and immersive way," said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president of Intel. "Whether it is controlling a game with your gestures or easily scanning your face or an object for 3D printing, the Acer Aspire V Nitro featuring Intel Core processors and Intel RealSense is an exciting step forward for consumers looking for a high-performance notebook."
For those who don't need the computer's 3D capabilities, Acer will be offering performance upgrades for a number of its other models, too. The Aspire R 13 convertible and the S7 Ultrabook will both be getting a fifth-generation Intel Core processor, allowing for both faster processing and better battery life. Acer has not revealed too much about the computers just yet, but it has said that each should get a good 10 hours of battery life, which is up from around 7 or 8 hours.
Acer also recently revealed a 15.6-inch Chromebook, with users being able to select a fifth-generation Intel Core i3 or a Celeron processor. It also includes either 16 GB or 32 GB of solid-state storage and either 2 GB or 4 GB of RAM. The computer will start at $249.99. A launch date for it has not yet been announced.
