Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts have announced the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational.
The tournament will be the largest yet for the popular shooter, featuring the biggest number of teams competing for the top spot so far.
Apex Legends Preseason Invitational
As announced by EA, the competition will be held between Sept. 13 and 15 in Kraków, Poland. It's going to be a double elimination tournament where team after team will either go up in the winners bracket or go down in the losers bracket until only 20 teams are left standing.
Now 80 teams of three, which are 240 people in total, will be competing for a prize pool worth $500,000. That's not all the winners are going to get. They'll also win "legendary bragging rights," as Respawn puts it.
The tournament is invitational only, meaning there isn't going to be any qualifier for it. Teams have to apply for an entry by sending an email to EA to get a chance to enter, assuming they meet all the eligibility requirements.
eSports Cash Prizes
Half a million is, by all means, a huge amount, and it's the biggest prize pool an Apex Legends tournament has ever had. However, it can't really hold a candle to what the largest Fortnite competitions are putting up.
Case in point, the 16-year-old teenager Kyle Giersdorf, better known as Bugha, just scored $3 million all for himself in the recent Fortnite World Cup, which had a $30 million prize pool. The Dota 2 tournament The International is set to top that in August, though, offering $100 million worth of prize money.
Funnily enough, Tyler Blevins, also known as Ninja, earned $1 million streaming Apex Legends. Sure, this wasn't a tournament or anything like it, but it's twice as much as the prize pool of the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational.
That's understandable, though. Apex Legends isn't that old of a game, after all.
