At QuakeCon 2019, Bethesda announced re-releases of the first three Doom titles, giving gamers a chance to relive what the old-school shooters have to offer before Doom Eternal rolls out on Nov. 22.
The thing is, players need to log in to a Bethesda.net account before they can play any of the three, which doesn't sit well with both fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.
Doom Online?
As a silver lining of sorts, Doom and Doom 2 only require players to log in once, but that doesn't change the fact that they still need an online account to play. Meanwhile, Doom 3 requires players to log in all the time.
This is a bit odd considering that the trio were originally offline games, which date all the way back to the '90s. Sure, Doom and Doom 2 both had multiplayer support. However, it wasn't online, but rather it was local.
Fans' Reactions
As noted, fans aren't exactly happy about the log-in requirement, and they took to Twitter to express their frustrations.
While some are just outright complaining, others apparently had their creative juices flowing and turned the whole hullabaloo into a meme — that is, they imposed the log-in warning onto other popular games such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Castlevania.
The re-releases of Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 are available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. Doom and Doom 2 cost $4.99 a pop, while Doom 3 is priced at $9.99.
