Square Enix is laying out a plan to take home a Game of the Year award. According to a new job listing, the Final Fantasy company is looking for a key person to work on its ambitious Avengers video game project, which was teased a couple of years ago.
Specifically, video game project developer Crystal Dynamics, which Square Enix owns, is currently hiring a narrative director. This person would be tasked with creating "memorable, emotional, and cinematic experiences," meaning whatever the game is going to be, it'll mostly definitely be a story-driven title.
Square Enix Vying For Game Of The Year
In addition, the listing also reveals that the Avengers game will have "narrative gameplay elements," and it later reiterates that the job would entail making an "emotional" gameplay experience. Details on the story are nebulous as of this time, but the listing does reveal a key goal — become a Game of the Year contender. The narrative director, it states, must have a "passion for games and ambition to create a Game of the Year title."
Game of the Year is perhaps the most prestigious award in the video game world, recipients of which include Overwatch, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and most recently, God of War. Publications each have their own list at the end of the year, but the annual Game Awards may be the most recognized. It's not exactly clear what makes a title Game of the Year material, as all awards are subjective. But perhaps at the very least, it must introduce something new to the table, reinvent old video game traditions in fresh ways, break boundaries and blur genres, and in general, please players. Of course, each publication will have a different criteria.
Avengers Video Game
As for the Avengers video game itself, hiring a narrative director implies the game may not be quite as far along as some have hoped. The game has been in development for years, but there hasn't been any significant news about it since the initial tease. It's unclear when Square Enix or Marvel might share more details about the title.
Perhaps there might be a surprise announcement this June during E3, although that's highly unlikely. In any case, Square Enix has confirmed that it's going to host an E3 conference this year.
