For April Fools' Day 2018, Square Enix is going with a mobile app similar to Pokémon GO.
Called Final Fantasy XIV Online GO, the game tasks players with going outdoors to gather resources as a miner, a botanist, or a fisher. In other words, it's taking the MMORPG experience one step closer to real life.
Gameplay: Immersion Goes Up A Notch
Final Fantasy XIV Online GO focuses only on the gathering part, which is arguably one of the most tedious jobs Final Fantasy XIV has to offer.
As the mobile app's description claims, it's one way to stockpile in-game resources while out and about in the real world.
"The app will allow you to go outside in the real world and gather popotos, lightning shards, and any other materials detected near you! When you log back into FFXIV, you'll have everything you harvested waiting in your inventory," it reads.
Accessories: GO Harvesting Stick
If the premise of Final Fantasy XIV Online GO doesn't sound ridiculous enough — or clever, rather — Square Enix still has one more trick up its sleeve: the patented, state-of-the-art GO Harvesting Stick.
Don't let its appearance fool you. It's not just a plastic stick, like, say, a monopod. It's a "very special" plastic stick. The special part is it turns smartphones into a mining hammer or a botanist's axe, boosting success rates of gathering resources to 100 percent. Its functionality doesn't end there either. It can even be used as a fishing rod, transforming mobile devices into the "ultimate fishing accessory."
Put differently, it's the perfect way to break a smartphone and have fun doing it to boot.
Aside from the name, it doesn't really take plenty of elements from Pokémon GO. It doesn't even make fun of Niantic's creation. Instead, Square Enix is more or less poking fun at Final Fantasy XIV and itself, which is refreshing to see.
