Rumor: Cheaper, Smaller Nintendo Switch Is Launching This 2019

Nintendo is rumored to release a new version of the Switch that's not only smaller and more portable but also on the less expensive side. However, it's said to lose some features in exchange.

If the report turns out to be accurate, then it could launch sometime in 2019.

Nintendo Switch Lite Or Mini?

As the Japan-based news website Nikkei claims, which was translated by Nintendo Everything, Nintendo is already working on a "smaller version of the Switch."

The company didn't comment on the matter, but it reportedly told numerous suppliers and game development firms that it's eyeing a 2019 release.

As mentioned earlier, Nintendo is expected to remove some features so that it can roll out the console with a lower price tag. There's no word on what's going to be cut, though.

New Nintendo Online Service

Aside from a miniature Switch, Nikkei also says that Nintendo is planning to launch a new kind of online service for "game enthusiasts willing to pay more." It's also said to go live in 2019.

It's unclear whether this is an upgrade for its Switch Online service or not, though. In case it's a separate product, it's possible that it's a subscription for classic games, potentially in the same vein as the Virtual Console.

Switch Features That Could Go

According to speculations, Nintendo could be ditching the dock for this new Switch version. That doesn't only align with previous conjectures but also with the report from Nikkei that says it'll be focused on "portability and playing outdoors."

Another theory that makes sense is that the company is taking out cartridges out of the picture here. That way, it can double down on downloadable digital games and online subscriptions, which is also in line with the report.

From what can be gathered, Nintendo is making a new Switch geared toward gamers on a budget who value portability.
