'Venom' Is Breaking Box-Office Records Despite Bad Reviews

New Sony movie Venom is dominating the opening weekend record for the month of October with an estimated sale of $80 million.

The movie stars Tom Hardy. Despite the film's bad reviews, the newest Marvel film's sales has not been affected. It took a staggering $10 million last Thursday in its preview screenings and has continued to elevate its marks on other screening surveys.

October Box Office Hits

Currently, the biggest opening for the month of October is held by 2013's Gravity with $55.78 million. Despite Venom's 28 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, it has still generated impressive sales, even with another well-known movie, A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. So far, Cooper's directorial debut has amassed $4.6 million in sales.

Compared to Venom, A Star Is Born has done well in its Rotten Tomatoes rating. It has garnered a 91 percent fresh score on the website. Cooper co-wrote its screenplay with Will Fetters and Eric Roth.

Following the top 2 movies for the box office is Smallfoot, an animated film that made $52.6 million in the first eight days of its showing. The movie features Danny DeviTo, Gina Rodriguez, Yara Shahidi, Jimmy Tatro, NBA star LeBron James, Zendaya, and Channing Tatum. The film is followed by the comedy flick Night School, starring Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart.

About Sony's 'Venom'

On Friday, Hardy and Michelle William's movie opened with $32.75 million. This makes it on top of the October and September releases, save for the horror movie It, which premiered last year. Hardy's character has been compared to Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn portrayed by Margot Robbie, and Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds.

Venom is directed Ruben Fleischer, the same creative behind Zombieland. In the movie, Hardy plays journalist Eddie Brock, who connects to an alien symbiote to become Venom, Spider-Man's iconic villain. The movie was produced with a $100 million budget.

Furthermore, the story is connected to Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics Universe. According to reports, the studio has future plans to make more movies that highlights other supporting characters in Spider-Man such as Black Cat, Nightwatch, Silver Sable, and Morbius.
