A leak reveals that the names for the new iPhones coming out 2018 are the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, and iPhone XC, which makes much more sense compared to previous rumors.
The official names will be revealed in a Sept. 12 event that Apple will hold at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park Campus in Cupertino, California. It is very likely that these are the names of the new iPhones, but Apple fans will know for sure in a few days.
2018 iPhone Name Leaks
An exclusive 9to5Mac report revealed that the 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED iPhones that Apple will release this year will be named the iPhone XS, bringing back the "S" moniker that was last seen with the iPhone 6S.
A follow-up 9to5Mac report, however, claimed that instead of going with the "Plus" name for the larger variant of the iPhone X successor, Apple will be calling it the iPhone XS Max.
The iPhone XS name already looked weird, as most people have been calling the iPhone X as "iPhone Ex" instead of "iPhone Ten." Replacing "Plus" with "Max" for the larger 2018 OLED iPhone further pushed Apple's branding decisions into stranger territory.
New Leak Reveals Names Of New iPhones
A new leak, discovered on Chinese social media network Weibo by Macotakara, revealed the names of the 2018 iPhones. The image, which was taken during a China Mobile presentation, referred to the upcoming smartphones as the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, and iPhone XC.
The leak confirmed the iPhone XS name that 9to5Mac first reported, but it also revealed that the larger iPhone XS will be named the iPhone XS Plus, not the iPhone XS Max. Between the two names, Apple going with iPhone XS Plus makes much more sense.
Another branding decision that makes sense for Apple, as shown in the new leak, is to name the cheaper 6.1-inch LCD iPhone as the iPhone XC. The "C" branding was last seen with the iPhone 5C, which was a budget offering for the flagship smartphones released in 2013. The iPhone 5C came in a variety of colors, and prolific leaker Ben Geskin claimed that the iPhone XC will do the same.
The leak from Weibo also shows the prices of the new iPhones in Chinese yuan, and when converted, tags the iPhone XC at $700, the iPhone XS at $900, and the iPhone XS Plus at $1,000. These figures are about the same as in previous rumors on the prices of the 2018 iPhones.
