Rebecca Ferguson Eyed For Role In Denis Velleneuve's 'Dune'

Mission: Impossible star Rebecca Ferguson is rumored to be joining Timothée Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune.

Villeneuve is the same director who was responsible for Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival. He will be directing from a script made by Eric Roth. The rights to turn the iconic novel into a movie was closed by Legendary in 2016 and the studio is planning to make multiple films.

Theme Of Frank Herbert's 'Dune'

Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose clan controls Arrakis, a desert planet. The planet produces a valuable drug resource called Melange, also known as 'spice.' The drug offers heightened consciousness to its users and even extends their lifespan.

The planet's control is challenged by other noble families. After Paul's family is betrayed, the tale explores several themes which include religion, politics, and the relationship of man and nature, as the protagonist leads a rebellion in order to bring back the power to his family.

Lady Jessica taught her son the ways of the sisterhood. When she and Paul were banished during House Harkonnen's rise of power, they fled to the deserts of Arrakis, where they made a connection with the Fremen people. As her son grew influence over the nomadic group, they built an army.

The first Dune book was published in 1965. Over the years, there have been numerous adaptations of the Herbert novel. One of the most popular versions is the one directed by David Lynch in 1984 starring Kyle MacLachlan.

The film will be produced Villeneuve, Cale Boyter, Brian Herbert, Thomas Tull, Kim Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Mary Parent. Its creative consultant will be Kevin J. Anderson.
