Samsung just launched a new line of gaming monitors at Gamescom that aren't just fast, but fairly inexpensive as well. The new lineup is perfect for gamers who want an above-average display without splashing out too much cash.
The series, labeled CJG5, delivers many of the core features every gamer would want on their monitor, but sheds the unnecessary extras to keep the price down. The lineup, as mentioned, boasts curved panels which Samsung says provides a more natural focus for one's eyes. They also feature a speedy 144 Hz refresh rate, which should pave the way for buttery-smooth gaming experiences.
Samsung's New CJG5 Monitors Won't Break The Bank
Unfortunately, the CJG5 is only available in two variants: users can choose between 27 and 32 inches, and both come in a standard 16:9 aspect ratio with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. The display is VA instead of IPS, which is something to keep in mind. They also don't have Samsung's fancy schmancy quantum dot technology, but that was probably left out to ensure cut costs. To make up for it, Samsung says game and cinema modes are built into the monitors to automatically optimize them for black gamma level, contrast, sharpness, and saturation.
The austerity doesn't stop there, however. The ports, while fairly sufficient, leave much to be desired. Gamers have to make do with the two HDMI connectors, only one of which is HDMI 2.0, a DisplayPort 1.2 jack, and a headphone port. That's about it — no USB Type-C, Thunderbolt, or any of those. Again: cost-cutting. But it really wouldn't have hurt if Samsung added just a bit more ports in there.
"Due to the rapidly increasing demands of gaming monitors, we sought to offer competitively-priced gaming monitors for more users to benefit from premium technology," said Samsung's Seog-gi Kim. "With the technological expertise that we have accumulated throughout the years, we are making efforts to accelerate the gaming features such as 144Hz and high WQHD resolution, which will be appreciated by the mass market."
Samsung CJG5 Pricing And Release Date
Samsung has yet to unveil details such as pricing and release date in the United States, but as The Verge reports, the 27-inch model is going to cost £309.99, while the 32-inch variant will be a bit more expensive at £359.99. Those hover around the $400 to $500 when converted, although pricing schemes tend to go lower when products reach stateside.
