The Pininfarina PFO electric hypercar, a Tesla Roadster challenger that is targeting a 2020 launch, is expected to reach a top speed of 250 miles per hour.
The electric hypercar will be created by Automobili Pininfarina, the spinoff of the 90-year-old design house that will be focusing on luxury electric vehicles. The PFO will be its first production car, which shows that Pininfarina is looking to make a massive splash in the electric vehicle market right upon its entry.
The Pininfarina PFO Electric Hypercar: Here's What We Know
The Pininfarina electric car was first teased in March, but details were limited to the vehicle being a powerful one and targeting to launch in 2020.
However, more information on the Pininfarina PFO have now been released, including a neck-breaking top speed of 250 miles per hour and a zero to 60 miles per hour time faster than 2 seconds.
In an interview with The Verge, Automobili Pininfarina CEO Michael Perschke also revealed that the electric hypercar will have a range of 300 miles on a single charge, and that it will take only 10 to 15 minutes of charging to get the PFO's battery back up to 80 percent.
The battery placement of the Pininfarina PFO is also designed to keep the electric hypercar low to the ground. While Tesla and other electric vehicle manufacturers usually place the battery in the floor for passenger space, Pininfarina will position it in a central tunnel.
The interior technology that will be featured in the Pininfarina PFO has not yet been finalized, but the car designer said that it will look to integrate the work of a tech company instead of having to do the work on its own.
Another interesting tidbit about the Pininfarina PFO is its eco-friendly aspect beyond its electric engine. The vehicle will feature paint without chemical ingredients, natural wood, and other materials described as "ethically sourced."
Pininfarina PFO Electric Hypercar vs Tesla Roadster
The Pininfarina PFO electric hypercar, based on its known specifications and features, certainly has what it takes to challenge the new Tesla Roadster. The refreshed Tesla Roadster, described as the fastest production car ever made and is also targeting a 2020 release, will feature a similar top speed and zero to 60 miles per hour time as the Pininfarina PFO, as well as other challengers like the Aspark Owl.
The comparison between the two electric vehicles, however, ends with the price tag. While the Tesla Roadster price will start at $200,000, the Pininfarina PFO electric hypercar price will reportedly be between $2 million and $2.5 million.
There is no assurance that the new Tesla Roadster will be launched in 2020 though, due to the company's manufacturing delays.
