Samsung will inevitably announce the Galaxy Note 9 later this year; that's pretty much a given. So all eyes are now on the true sequel to the Galaxy S9.
According to a new report, Samsung is making a number of radical charges for its next S-series smartphone. Reputable Korea publication The Bell claims that the company is going to remove the phone's iris scanner — a major component of its "Intelligent Scan" unlocking feature.
Why Samsung Is Removing The Iris Scanner
The reason? Samsung wants to replace the iris scanner with a much better 3D face-scanning module that's more accurate and much closer in terms of functionality to that of the iPhone X. The report says Samsung has been working with an Israeli company called Mantis to create the module, and it's apparently very close to mass production. If it misses schedule, however, the report claims Samsung will revert to the iris scanner.
In-Display Fingerprint Scanner On Samsung Galaxy S10
That's not all.
The Bell says Samsung is also debuting an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10, a feature that was supposedly intended for the Galaxy Note 9. The competition in this department is already tough, however. Rival brands Oppo and Vivo are now slowly implementing the technology into their smartphones. Better late than never, though.
Samsung Galaxy S10 Display Size
Samsung will apparently retain the same screen sizes from last generation: 5.8 inches for the standard model, and 6.3 inches for the Plus model. That being said, the physical dimensions of both phones will be reduced as Samsung is apparently making the bezels even smaller than they already are, and it doesn't want to resort to putting a notch on top, as some manufacturers have done. If true, Samsung deserves merit for not succumbing to Apple's radical design, which has been the subject of much debate among Apple and Android fans alike.
Do note that these are all just rumors and they should be taken with a grain of salt. If they end up being true, however, then Samsung definitely has the opportunity to outperform Apple in the biometrics department, seeing as the iPhone X doesn't have a fingerprint module and relies solely on Face ID for security. If Samsung manages to put a facial scanning component on par with the iPhone X, plus an in-display fingerprint sensor, then the Galaxy S10 will surely be a big hit.
