Telltale Games has announced that the sequel to 2013's The Wolf Among Us has been delayed into 2019. The follow-up title to the popular narrative series was originally scheduled to be released this year.
The studio explains the delay is because of recent restructuring efforts inside the company. This could refer to layoffs last year that cut Telltale Games' staff by 25 percent, though at the time, the company said it will make sure its upcoming projects wouldn't be affected.
Why 'The Wolf Among Us 2' Is Getting Delayed
"The delay comes as the result of a few fundamental changes here at Telltale since we first announced the game last summer," Telltale Games wrote in a blog post. "Taking this extra time will allow us not only to focus on quality but also to experiment and iterate in order to craft something truly special."
The Wolf Among Us
Based upon the Fables comic book series, The Wolf Among Us puts players in the shoes of Sheriff Bigby Wolf as he attempts to maintain law and order among fantastical creatures that roam among regular, non-magic people. The season's five episodes were released in October 2013, all of which were received with acclaim by critics and audiences alike. The PC version currently has an 80 percent rating on Metacritic.
Here's an excerpt from IGN's review:
"The writing is great, the action is satisfying, and living with the consequences of my decisions is fantastically powerful. Simply put, The Wolf Among Us' finale provides some of the finest storytelling I've played in a long time."
Whatever the studio has in store for the second installment, it's not willing to tell just yet, but it did say it's planning to explore "new ways to tell our stories," which could potentially take the game beyond its traditional quick time event-style of gameplay.
Though slightly disappointing, development delays are fairly a common occurrence in the video game world, with some projects getting extended several years past its intended release schedule, like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Overall, though, development for the sequel seems to be going smoothly, as Telltale Games suggests. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.
"We're extremely enthusiastic about how the game is progressing so far, and we can't wait to dig even deeper."
