It's difficult to get good food for an astronaut who is in outer space. One couldn't wait to indulge in one of his favorite foods, so he took matters into his own hands.
A NASA astronaut decided to order pizza so that when he is finished with his mission, it would be ready for him.
Hot And Ready
Astronaut Mike Massimino recalled how he ordered pizza during his descent back to earth after a screening of the documentary, One Strange Rock. He stated that pizza is an astronaut's favorite food and NASA recently engineered zero gravity-ready pizza-making kits. Astronauts can make these pizzas by using gift packages of space station food to make mini-pies.
These kits, however, are nothing compared to the real thing, as Massimino explained that zero gravity can't compete with the freshly baked pizza that's here on Earth. Massimino traveled on two separate space shuttle missions in 2002 and 2009. Massimino is now retired.
Fellow astronaut, Randy Bresnik, also praised space pizza as one of the best treats he was able to enjoy during his time on the International Space Station. Bresnik and his crew also filmed how astronauts make pizza in 2017.
"Because the texture and the taste was so different than the regular free-dried food we had, it was the best pizza I ever had," Bresnik commented.
One Strange Rock
One Strange Rock is a National Geographic documentary that was hosted by I Am Legend actor Will Smith, and produced by Black Swan director, Darren Aronofsky. The series follows how life survives on planet earth and consists of ten episodes told from the viewpoint of eight astronauts.
Each episode focuses on one astronaut and one fundamental aspect of life on Earth. The final episode premiered on May 28, 2018. It centered around the first woman to command the ISS, Peggy Whitson.
During a panel discussion about the series, Whitson also spoke on the importance of pizza and how it greatly shaped her experience in space. Whitson, along with Massimino, spoke on their experiences as astronauts and how they began to consider people on Earth, "earthlings".
The two astronauts did express how their time in space made them appreciate Earth and see how beautiful it really is. Other participating astronauts that were featured in the documentary were Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, and Jerry Linenger, who was on board the Russian Mir space station that caught on fire in 1997.
