Zombie Survival Game ‘State Of Decay 2’ Crosses 1 Million Players, But There’s More Work To Do

Microsoft and Undead Labs is happy to report that State of Decay 2 has managed to gain over 1 million players since launch, with 6 million hours of combined gameplay all over the globe.

That number includes those who played the game when the Ultimate Edition was released via Early Access on May 18, combined with those who downloaded the game's Standard Edition that was released on May 22.

In addition, folks have watched a total of 3.5 million hours of gameplay across popular livestreaming platforms, including Twitch, Mixer, and YouTube.

"After this exciting debut, we look forward to seeing the community continue to grow thanks to fans and Xbox Game Pass members sharing their stories and showing off their ultimate survival plan," Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

State Of Decay 2

A sequel to 2013's State of Decay, State of Decay 2 is an Xbox One and PC exclusive title developed by Undead Labs and published by Microsoft. It is a third-person zombie survival game set in an open-world environment that features co-op play with up to three other people.

The main goal of the game is survival. Players explore a vast area for weapons and items, claim safehouses, and find new spots to migrate to, much like any zombie-based survival narratives.

State Of Decay 2 Glitches

Despite its commercial success, things aren't looking pretty in terms of critical reception. The game currently boasts a disappointing score of 68 on Metacritic, indicating mostly mixed to negative reviews. One of the primary reasons why it has such a low score is presumably because of its various glitches, which handicap the game's full potential.

"Despite its inventive take on the zombie survival genre, State of Decay 2 struggles with technical issues. Cooperative multiplayer and flexible play may appeal to some, but its pacing issues and a barrage of bugs make it a hard sell," says Digital Trends in its review.

"Theoretically, State of Decay 2 should be that polished follow-up. It has had five years to cook, leverages more powerful hardware, and already has its own predecessor as a sound proof of concept," says Ars Technica in its review, which goes on to highlight many of the game's technical problems, among which include zombies getting stuck on a wall, the third-person camera freezing, a teammate accidentally jumping off a billboard platform instead of going down the ladder like they're supposed to, and many others.

Microsoft is at least acknowledging these issues, it should be noted.

"The team at Microsoft Studios and Undead Labs continue to work on updating the game to address these issues as our number one priority," said Xbox marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg.

State of Decay 2 is now available on Xbox One and PC.
