Dark Souls Remastered is now welcoming new and old players alike, but it is already plagued with an infamous hacker ruining the experience for them.
Hacker Harasses Players In 'Dark Souls: Remastered'
The notorious Dark Souls hacker called Malcolm Reynolds is now invading worlds to harass other players who stand no chance against his hacked magic spells. He streamed his first Dark Souls Remastered hacking experience, showing how destructive his fireball spell is.
He did not even need to see the other player; he can just throw the fireball in their general direction to deal massive damage. This kills the victim immediately while simultaneously destroying their equipment and casting Curse and the "Egghead" statuses.
The Curse is an affliction that follows into the players' resurrected state and reduces their HP by half. The "Egghead" effect infects players with a brain worm, which disables the players' ability to wear helmets and consumes half of the souls they get.
Players can remove these statuses, but they will need special items that are hard to obtain at the beginning of the game. According to Reynolds, his victims might as well start over with a new character.
How To Avoid Hackers In 'Dark Souls: Remastered'
Hackers have always been a major problem in the PvP mode in the Dark Souls series. Most kill players left and right with overpowered skills, being invisible, or having infinite health. Some even found a way to get innocent players softbanned by having the game identify them as cheaters.
This resulted in a mod called PVP Watch Dog that alerted players when they were facing a hacker. However, the creator of the mod told the Souls community that he is not making one for Dark Souls Remastered.
According to him, Dark Souls has been around for six years with four games on different engines, yet each one has the same flaws and the same amount of hackers.
"It's time FromSoft fixed their own games without relying on the efforts of the community," he added.
A Reddit thread shared some tips on what to do if players encounter a hacker in Dark Souls Remastered. It suggested blocking the cheater and re-rolling the character, but some have noted that the hacker uses a different account each day, so it does not exactly fix the problem.
Until the developers themselves develop a fix, the only surefire way of avoiding hackers is to play offline, which does not have some core features, such as summons.
Dark Souls Remastered is now available on Steam. It is set to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 25.
