Apple Quietly Drops USB-C To Lightning Cable Price: What Does This Mean For This Year's iPhones?

Apple has quietly reduced the price of its USB-C to Lightning Cable, a move that may be connected to the iPhone models coming out this year.

There are a lot of rumors on this year's iPhones, with the speculation surrounding a price drop for an Apple accessory merely a drop in the bucket. However, the lower price of the USB-C to Lightning Cable still shows the direction that Apple is taking for the 2018 iPhone models.

Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable Price Slashed

The USB-C to Lightning Cable was quietly reduced in price by Apple, as spotted by 9to5Mac.

The cable, which enables faster charging for iPhones and iPad, was launched at a price of $25 for the 1-meter version and $35 for the 2-meter version. However, it looks like the price of the one-meter USB-C to Lightning Cable was dropped to $19 sometime last month.

The part number of the 1-meter cable was also changed, from MK0X2AM to MQGJ2AM. The price and part number of the two-meter cable, meanwhile, remained the same.

It should be noted that the USB-A to Lightning Cable, which is the one currently included in every iPhone and iPad purchase, also carries a price tag of $19. The two kinds of Lightning cables now have the same price.

It remains unclear if the USB-C to Lightning Cable price drop is a permanent one, but there is no indication that it will be a temporary change.

What Does The Price Drop Mean For The 2018 iPhone?

The USB-C to Lightning Cable provides faster charging to users. iPhone 8 and iPhone X owners, for example, can recover 50 percent of the battery of their devices in just 30 minutes.

The price drop, however, was probably not made for what it could offer to owners of current iPhones. The price adjustment comes after reports that this year's iPhones will come with the USB-C to Lightning Cable instead, along with the rumored 18W USB-C Power Adapter, instead of the USB-A to Lightning Cable and its corresponding charger.

The new USB-C to Lightning Cable price does not confirm the reports, but it certainly makes them more believable.

What Else Do We Know About The 2018 iPhones?

The widely accepted rumor is that Apple will launch three new iPhone models this year, specifically an upgraded iPhone X, a larger iPhone X Plus, and a less expensive version of the iPhone X. The smartphone currently referred to as the iPhone X Plus is believed to be as big as the iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple, however might have to rethink its iPhone branding, as some names will no longer make sense in the near future.
