Elon Musk: Roadster Update Details Coming Next Week

Fasten your seatbelt: Tesla's Roadster, which is currently out of production, is finally getting an update. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has confirmed the news, with more details coming very soon.

The Roadster was the first car unveiled by Tesla. Production of the vehicle went on from 2008 to 2012. It was then supplanted by the Model S, which became the status vehicle in Hollywood by default and had a record sale of about 50,000 pieces globally since it first hit the road.

The car was temporarily on a two-year hiatus before Musk decided to hit the ground running again.

When Tesla held its 2014 shareholder meeting, it was revealed that the automaker would do "something cool" with the Roadster at least before the end of 2014.

Musk said at the Auto Express held a few months ago that the Tesla Roadster update will showcase better features, including an upgraded battery, which could give the car increased range of about 400 miles. The Roadster originally had a range of 245 miles.

Tesla also announced the launch of a pilot program that features the so-called "battery swap," which it demoed in June 2013. Beginning this week, Model S owners who have been invited by the company can start swapping car batteries at a facility found at Harris Ranch, California, aptly known as "Superchargers."

After the announcement of the update, however, fans may have to be a little more patient since the rollout could take a while. Musk explained the delay due to a number of high-priority issues. While details were not disclosed, some have hinted that it is caused by some issues with the upcoming Model X.

With production scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2015, the Tesla Model X is said to belong to the all-wheel drive and all-electric crossover iteration. It will use a unique set of doors known as "Falcon doors."

Whatever Tesla is preparing for the much-awaited reveal, fans will definitely be on a constant lookout in this season of surprises.
