64 GB Not Enough? Samsung Releases 128 And 256 GB Models For Galaxy S9, S9 Plus

Samsung confirms that it's going to release bigger storage options for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in the United States.

Beginning May 1, users can preorder a Galaxy S9 or S9 Plus with either 128 or 256 GB of storage. Both feature expandable memory for those who might need even more space. Shipping starts May 18, the same day it'll begin selling the models directly to customers from its online store.

Why You Need Big Storage These Days

The idea of 256 GB might seem a tad bit too much, but consider the kind of technology packed into the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. These phones are capable of recording 4K video and slow-motion video, both of which definitely take up a lot of space. Apps, too, have become larger in recent years, especially graphics-intensive ones that the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus can run. Bigger storage is also a godsend for those who use Spotify, as they need plenty of space for their offline music collection.

"Our phones are filled with big files such as uncompressed photos, 4K videos, feature-length movies and more," said Samsung's Justin Denison in a statement. "With these new high-capacity models and the flexibility of expandable storage, Galaxy S9 and S9+ owners have a variety of ways to keep their content close."

Galaxy S9 And S9 Plus

Beyond the storage upgrades, everything else about the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus practically remain the same. They're still gorgeous premium-tier flagships with an Infinity Display, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Both phones are running Android Oreo.

The only difference between the two is that the larger one has dual cameras, while the smaller model only has one. The Galaxy S9 camera is capable of a feature called variable aperture, which allows the camera to "see" more light and detail even in low light conditions. Only one of the Galaxy S9 Plus's two cameras has this, though.

Both phones have earned rave reviews from critics and users alike, with the only complaint being that they don't seem that much of an upgrade from 2017's Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Samsung should have introduced more than just the variable aperture camera. An in-display fingerprint sensor would have been nice, perhaps? It's not like that's impossible.
